EXECUTIVE TEAM
The Team Behind Global Diagnostic Services, Inc.
Marc Upshaw is CEO and founder of Global Diagnostic Services, Inc. He and his family currently reside in Metro Atlanta. He is originally from Columbus, Georgia and attended Columbus High School. Upon graduation, Marc accepted a four year student /athlete scholarship to play basketball at the University of Rhode Island. Several NBA teams including the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers pursued him heavily. An injury to his knee ended a life long dream to play in the NBA but ultimately lead to other opportunities.
Marc graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a major in Communications and a minor in Marketing. His first job was as a sales representative with a major health insurance agency. He received numerous awards prior to moving into management and after one year decided to open an agency in Raleigh, NC. Shortly thereafter, Marc opened a second office located in Greensboro, N.C. Although he was experiencing a great deal of success in North Carolina, he decided to move back to Atlanta, GA to pursue aspirations of entering the medical field.
After months of rejections and with no experience whatsoever in the medical field, Marc was given an opportunity to work with a major occupational medicine clinic as a sales/marketing representative. While working in the field, Marc identified a need that would be both beneficial for physicians as well as their patients. Thus, in 1994 Global Diagnostic Services, Inc. was born. To date, GDS has a diagnostic and staffing division with over 125 employees (some contract) and services over 25 locations throughout the states of Georgia, Alabama and Florida as well as in Washington, DC.
Marc attributes much of
his success to taking risks, faith, perseverance and a great management
staff.
Chistopher L. Tharrington, M.D. is GDS' Medical Director. After training at Duke University, Dr. Tharrington has practiced as a general diagnostic radiologist for over a decade. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology, and is both credentialed for and comfortable with interpretation of exams from all imaging modalities.
One of Dr.Tharrington's main areas of professional interest is body imaging. He enjoys the role that diagnostic radiology can play as a part of the patient care team, in providing useful information to health care providers to utilize in clinical management. He is therefore always happy to interact with clinicians as well as ancillary staff, to answer questions or provide feedback as needed, and to correlate results from GDS diagnostic imaging studies with those from other imaging modalities.
Dr. Tharrington's past and present professional organization memberships include the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Radiologist in Ultrasound, the American Medical Association, and various state and county medical societies. He obtains over 50 hours per year of continuing medical education, to maintain his professional expertise and stay abreast of developments and improvements in the field of diagnostic radiology.
Robyn R. Melton, R.D.M.S. is Vice President of Operations for GDS. Robyn grew up in Miami, FL, where pursuing college courses began long before graduating from Southwest Miami High. After studying the life sciences, arts and languages at the local community college, she transferred to Life College in Atlanta during the summer of 1978. She returned to Miami in 1991 at which time she resumed her pursuit for a higher education in the medical field at the National School of Technology. Over the next two years, she received her certification as a sonographer.
After getting her first taste of the "mobile" life in Miami, she moved back to Atlanta determined to one day play a major role in the start up of a diagnostic service. Her work experience has included a local hospital, freelancing with an agency, an OB/GYN office as well as general cardiovascular ultrasound instructor at Ultrasound Diagnostic Schools of Atlanta. Nearly four years ago, and through their mutual commitment to excellence in healthcare, she met and began to work with Marc Upshaw. They have been working together ever since. She is very proud to be a part of Global as this represents the fulfillment of a life long dream.
Robyn has had the good fortune of having studied many disciplines in her ultrasound education, including abdominal, pelvic, OB/GYN, small parts, vascular and echocardiography. Although obstetrics is her first love, finding an abdominal aneurysm that saved her mom's life six years ago will always remain the highlight of her career as a sonographer.
